Liam's Rockery

Our youngest is severely autistic and has an intellectual disability but loved to potter about in the garden. When the local council extended the house to meet his needs he was left with a relatively small garden. Our aim was to provide Liam with a nice garden area with sensory lights and a water feature to one side as well as a raised decking seated area for him to relax in and watch his TV outside in good weather.
The aim of this project was to provide the nice garden area.
We started with a bare slab where once an old concrete shed stood. We built up the walls of what was to be a two tier Rockery. The stone blocks where stuck together with strong adhesive rather than cement to give the impression the blocks were just stacked together.
We then trimmed the soil around the edge of the slab to add a weed proof covering topped with bark providing a soft walking area around the Rockery for Liam. This trimmed section was bordered with the same stone as the Rockery walls where it met the garden.
We filled the Rockery with the trimmings from the edge and top soil and a qualified electrician fitted the outdoor socket to power the small water feature.
We painted the surrounding walls and decorated with colorful garden ornaments Liam pick out.
We selected some child friendly plants and added some solar sensory lights as well as a speaker to Bluetooth sensory music to to help Liam relax.
